Klooster Ter Apel with Rebuilt West Wing and Boschkerk
Caption
Klooster Ter Apel was founded in 1465 by the Canons Regular of the Order of the Holy Cross and named Domus Novae Lucis, the “House of the New Light.” Construction continued through the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.
The medieval west wing disappeared after 1755, while the surviving monastery underwent major restoration in 1930–1933. A new west wing, designed by Danish architects Johannes and Inger Exner, was completed in 2001 and restored the four-sided enclosure without disguising the new work as medieval fabric.
Behind it stands the Boschkerk, the south-wing church that continued in Protestant use after the Reformation reached Westerwolde in 1593. The view therefore brings together medieval, restoration-era and contemporary phases of the same complex.
